“The Peoples’ Architect”, internationally renowned Daniel Libeskind, turns focus to key Rhodes precinct

Daniel Libeskind is the architect of some of the world’s most recognisable architectural landmarks including the Jewish Museum in Berlin and Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden. In 2003, Studio Libeskind won a competition for the World Trade Centre Master Plan in New York City. Libeskind is now turning his attention to a 3.5 hectare key mixed-use commercial and lifestyle hub at Rhodes in Sydney.

In collaboration with Sydney architect, Paul Reidy of Fitzpatrick Partners, and prominent Australian architect and environmental designer, Bob Nation AM, the Billbergia Property Group has commissioned New York based Studio Libeskind to develop a masterplan for part of the Rhodes precinct.

The 3.5ha property is arguably a cornerstone of Rhodes, which has been designated by the Greater Sydney Commission as a Strategic Centre. Located immediately adjacent to the Rhodes train station, the property currently comprises the offices of Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) and presents an open canvas to create a world class, mixed-use masterplan.

Billbergia has been a leader in the remaking of Rhodes and Wentworth Point suburbs since the days of these suburbs being heavy industry precincts. In cooperation with Canada Bay Council’s ground breaking vision for residential and commercial transformations of the area, Billbergia has pursued the delivery of major community infrastructure and transport improvements to enhance the local communities, including; the Bennelong Bridge, neighbourhood shopping centres, a significant community leisure centre, library and community centres, parklands and free community buses.

Billbergia’s work across the precinct has been acknowledged through prominent awards from the UDIA and the Master Builders’ Association.

Following Billbergia’s recent award to redevelop the HPE campus in Rhodes, the group has assembled a high calibre team to transform this major part of the peninsula.

With a sense of purpose in delivering something special for the community, workforce and residents, the team, including renowned international architect Studio Libeskind, is tasked to create a ‘world class’ integrated precinct built around work, live and play and to incorporate important elements such as aged living and aged care.

“Some of the best mixed-use work/live/play precincts of the world are fully integrated into city centres, and the aspiration is to bring these key elements, along with significant enhancements to transport, to the HPE site as part of the transformation process,” Billbergia chief executive Rick Graf said.

"As the workplace environment is dynamically changing, the vision is not about creating homogenous business park buildings and separate accommodation areas, but rather to shape and create a highly desirable urban environment. With a strong emphasis on transport, place making aspects, connectivity to the bay and quality open spaces, this precinct is being designed with all users in mind.”

Every phase of the planning and design process will be guided by world’s best practices in delivering high quality integrated, mixed-use spaces.

Anchored by HPE, the office component will likely see a number of ‘mini-clusters’ forming, and the intent will be to accommodate high value technology, health and education jobs in providing a viable and highly integrated office hub outside of the Sydney CBD. Newcomers to the precinct will not be housed within conventional space, but will enjoy a high level of amenities, quality accommodation and public spaces. Commercial real estate firm CBRE has been tasked to develop and pursue an integrated commercial tenancy strategy that considers a dynamic three-point, business-worker-workplace evolution.

Mr Graf said Studio Libeskind was renowned for designing some of the most iconic projects around the world and undertakes a ground up approach to their design; having careful consideration for the surroundings, and a deliberate integration of green, urban and open spaces.
